These photographs are part of an ongoing documentary project I am working on titled, Highway 89: Border to border, mile by mile. The vision of the work involves making a photograph at each one-mile interval along the entire historical route of the highway; from Piegan, Montana on the U.S.-Canadian border an the north end of the route to Nogales, Arizona on the U.S.-Mexican border in the south. Upon completion, the project will have over two thousand photographs.
US 89 is one of my favorite subjects to photograph. I am fascinated by the beauty and diversity of the landscape through which it runs, and I enjoy the challenge of creating a photograph at fixed intervals regardless of what the landscape offers. This project has pushed me creatively and visually to explore in greater detail the nuances of my surroundings. As I travel the highway, I am struck by the power and grandeur of the landscape; not only the landscape seen from the scenic overlooks and photo-turnouts along the way, but the one that unfolds mostly unnoticed in between.
